Women’s ice hockey has winning start to season

The Morrisville State women’s ice hockey team kicked off the season notching two home wins over Buffalo State on Friday Oct. 27, and Sunday Oct 28.

The Mustangs (2-0 overall, 0-0 Colonial hockey conference), came out of the gate strong in the first game as they quickly acquired a goal in the first period after only 38 seconds.

The goal was scored by Freshman Forward Alexziz Giannamore,  assisted by sophomore defenseman Jessica Ujcik. This was Giannamore’s first collegiate goal.

The Mustangs went on to score again with 18 minutes shaved off the first period. Freshman Forward Mackenzie Lambordi scored  with an assist  from freshman forward Maria DeWilde and freshman defenseman Chyne Kennedy.

The Bengals (0-2 overall, 0-0 Colonial Hockey conference) remained scoreless in the first period going 0-9 when shooting the puck, and had four penalties.

The Bengals fought back during the second period when they scored with 8 minutes off the clock. The goal was scored by sophomore forward Erin Gehen and the assist came from sophomore forward Jessica Carter.

Coach Lamanto was very excited to see what her returners could accomplish after all of their hard work during the offseason.

“I am looking forward to the leadership that our upperclassmen can contribute after winning the Colonial Hockey Conference Championship,” Coach Lamanto said in an interview.

“I am very excited about our season; we have eight new freshmen who will be playing key roles that brings in new dynamic to our program,”Lamanto continued

“Our upper classmen has done a great job creating our team culture with embracing what our freshman can contribute.

The mustangs ended the game going 0-4 in power plays, 4 penalties, and won 24 total faceoffs

The Mustangs have another double header on Friday Nov. 3 and Saturday Nov. 4 against Johnson and Wells College at the Wildcats place.
